Merton Council’s free handyperson service is open to all residents who are 65 years old and over, and people who have a long-term condition or disability.
The handyperson can help with:
- Small repairs such as putting up curtain rails, shelves, fixing down loose carpet and cables, and changing light bulbs.
- Safety measures like fitting smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, changing fuses, replacing existing light and switch fittings, and fitting light shades.
- Home security measures including fitting door and window locks, key safes, door chains and door viewers.
- Plumbing like clearing blocked u-bends/drains, unblocking toilets, sinks and baths, fitting tap washers, replacing broken toilet seats and re-sealing baths.
The handyperson's time and labour are free and there is no call-out charge. All you will have to pay for are the materials the handyperson uses to do the work.
The handyperson is unable to carry out emergency jobs, specialist worker or large jobs that would take more than two hours. The service does not cover works that are the legal responsibilities of the landlord if you are living in private or social housing.
